Grown in: South Africa
Profile: This crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsault (which was locally known as Hermitage) is very much its own creature, unabashed in its dark, smoky, charred fruit and leather flavors. Some versions of Pinotage have tended toward occasionally polarizing burnt rubber or fresh paint notes, though quality-minded local growers are getting better and better at managing the vines to emphasize the grape’s brambly boysenberry, fig and mocha side. The wines are often aged in new oak, which ups the cedar, warm spice and vanilla quotient.
Two to Try: Kanonkop or L’Avenir both do a good job of embracing the grape’s smoky-earthy character balanced with a good dose of bold fruit.
